King Kamehameha IV

Honoring King Kamehameha IV (Alexander Liholiho), a leader devoted to the health, well-being, and cultural heritage of his people. Born February 9, 1834, he became king in 1854 and, alongside Queen Emma, founded Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu to care for those in need, a legacy that continues today.

He also worked to preserve Hawaiian traditions, language, and sovereignty, ensuring the kingdom’s identity endured during a time of change.

Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani


Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani, born in 1826, was a direct descendant of Kamehameha I and a steadfast defender of Hawaiian culture. Known for her leadership , she famously intervened during the 1880–1881 Mauna Loa eruption, helping to protect the town of Hilo. She upheld traditional Hawaiian beliefs and practices, conducted her affairs in ʻōlelo Hawai‘i, and resisted Western influences, earning deep respect from her people. Upon her death in 1883, she bequeathed her vast lands to Bernice Pauahi Bishop, whose estate continues to preserve Hawaiian culture and support education through Kamehameha Schools.
