Hi`ipaka LLC, Waimea Valley on the North Shore of Oahu is seeking a full time Botanical Gardener to work on the botanical collection and grounds of Waimea Valley.
The Gardener's primary objective is to preserve, enhance, cultivate and care for plants in the botanical collections.
Waimea Valley is seeking a botanical gardener to work from: Tuesday to Saturday; 40 hrs per week; 8 hours per day.
Qualifications:
• Must be familiar with gardening tools and equipment used to cultivate and care for the botanical collections.
• Must have knowledge of tropical gardening practices & work under inclement weather.
• Must have the ability to read and understand chemical labels and SDS sheets and apply fertilizers and pesticides to maintain plant collections and property.
• Must be people-oriented and able to work well with others.
• Must have good oral communication skills.
Training and Experience:
• A minimum of a high school diploma or GED preferred.
• Experience in tropical gardening and weed control.
• Valid Driver's License required.

Position Title: Ho’ona’auao Specialist
Reports To: Cultural Programs Coordinator
Employment Type: Full-Time
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The cultural educator's primary objective is to conducts educational programs and tours for student groups and the public about the historic sites, artifacts, and botanical resources in the Valley. Educates the public about Hawaiian history and cultural practices by performing and/or demonstrating various practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs various tasks related to educating student groups and the public about the historic sites, artifacts, and botanical resources in the Valley. Tasks include, but may not be limited to:
Conducting programs, tours, school field trips, and hikes;
Assisting with signage, exhibits and self-guided interpretive material for all ages;
Assisting with program logistics and preparation, including program promotions, registration, pre-visit communications, preparation of teacher curriculum materials, and maintenance of education center and field sites.
Providing support to Cultural Programs Coordinator in planning and developing educational programs.
Presents various programs on Hawaiian history and culture including, but not limited to presentations on:
The interpretation of Hawaiian myths and legends;
Hawaiian history; and
Hawaiian cultural practices.
Performs and/or demonstrates practices or skills including, but not limited to:
Hawaiian cultural practices;
Hawaiian arts and crafts; and
Hawaiian games.
Responds to inquiries from visitors about Hawaiian history and cultural practices.
Follows all standards of behavior and performance, and applicable program curricula.
Works collaboratively with coworkers, outside contractors and volunteers in educating the public about Hawaiian history and culture.
Performs all duties safely and in accordance with established procedures.

Regular attendance on a scheduled basis is required for this position.

Participates in community events and/or public relations activities as directed by the Programs Group Manager and/or the Cultural Programs Coordinator.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Programs Group Manager and/or the Cultural Programs Coordinator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Must have detailed knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture, including Waimea Valley’s heritage. Must be familiar with major Hawaiian culture issues.
Must be knowledgeable about one or more specific Hawaiian cultural practices and skilled in the performance of such practices.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE
As a minimum, a high school diploma is required. A degree (associate or four year) in Hawaiian studies or a related field highly desirable.
At least two years of relevant community or Hawaiian agency experience.
Experience in conducting educational programs preferred.
Familiarity with major Hawaiian culture issues is desirable.
Must have experience in communicating Hawaiian history and culture to others.
Ability to speak and understand Hawaiian language preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Employee will be in contact with chemicals and materials normally found in office environments. Employee will also be in contact with pesticides, insecticides, fertilizer and similar materials used in the propagation, planting and maintenance of botanical collections. Employee will be exposed to low to high levels of noise. Employee will be exposed to sunlight, heat, humidity, dust, pollen, and inclement weather.
