Queen Liliʻuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom and a powerful leader during a time of great change. Trained from childhood to rule, she became queen in 1891 and worked to restore Hawaiian sovereignty and protect the rights of her people. After the overthrow of the monarchy, she continued to advocate for Hawaiians through peaceful resistance, diplomacy, and writing. Her memoir, Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen, preserves the Hawaiian perspective of these events and remains an important historical record today. Her legacy of courage, leadership, and resilience continues to inspire Hawaiʻi and beyond.
In honor of her birthday, Kamaʻāina receive FREE admission to Waimea Valley.
