Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa a Kamehameha’s Legacy
Born May 20, 1858, Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa a Kamehameha was the beloved only son of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, and heir to the Hawaiian Kingdom. Named for both his great uncle Kamehameha III and the Prince of Wales, he symbolized the hopes of a nation and a bridge between Hawaiʻi and the wider world.
Admired for his bright spirit, he was even made an honorary member of Honolulu’s Fire Engine Company Number Four. Though his life was tragically brief, his legacy endures in the deep aloha his parents held for their people, inspiring the establishment of lasting institutions of care and faith within the kingdom. To honor his birthday, kamaʻāina receive 50% off admission to the Valley.
