Botanical Library Intern

Seeking a paid Botanical Library Intern for an 18 month funded position. The selected candidate will assist in the data collection and creation of the data set of the botanical collections in the botanical gardens and conservation areas in Waimea Valley.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
•Provides information and data to maintain an inventory, database and updated map of all resources.
•Works collaboratively with Botanical Group Manager, Conservation Land Manager, Botanical Collection Specialist and Horticultural Specialist and other staff to ensure proper identification, preservation and enhancement of resources.
•Participates in community activities as requested by the Botanical Group Manager and Conservation Land Manager.
•Performs other duties as assigned by the Botanical Group Manager and Conservation Land Manager.
•Must be able to read site maps and landscape plans. Must be familiar with inventory control, labeling and database systems for resources collections.
•Must be knowledgeable about conservation issues and practices.
•Must have working knowledge regarding the propagation, selection, planting, maintenance, documentation, labeling, and mapping of botanical collections.
•Must be people-oriented and able to work well with others.
•Must be organized and self-starter. Must exercise independent judgment to prioritize projects and respond to situations as they arise without direct supervision.
•Must have good oral and written communication skills.
•Must project a professional demeanor.

EDUCATIONAL & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
•Must have a Bachelor's degree in library science, land resource management, conservation, horticulture, or other related field.
•Prior experience with Hawaii plant collections preferred

This is a temporary full time paid position for a period of 18 months and regular attendance on a daily basis is required. Waimea Valley is a seven day a week operation and night and weekend work is required. This position will be working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain. Facilities and Maintenance Worker

Seeking a Facilities and Maintenance Worker to work with the Facilities Manager to perform maintenance and minor repairs, including carpentry to buildings, paths, covered areas, bridges and roads on Waimea Valley premises. This person will also assist in vehicle and golf cart maintenance and repair. The Maintenance Worker may be asked to help with housekeeping and security duties from time to time in addition to the regularly assigned maintenance duties.

Skills and Knowledge Requirements
Must be able to follow the schedule of routine and preventive building maintenance (i.e., keeping gutters and drainage paths clear, checking for wood rot and termite damage, changing light bulbs, minor plumbing repairs, painting, etc.) set by the Facilities Manager.
Must comply with all safety and health procedures when operating equipment and vehicles, and while performing maintenance duties.
Must complete maintenance logs and checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures.
Must maintain vehicles, tools and equipment so they are clean and in working condition.
Must have basic knowledge of various building trades, such as electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall and plumbing.
Must be mechanically inclined.
Must exercise independent judgment and respond to situations as they arise, sometimes without direct supervision.
Must have a valid driver's license.

Education/Training
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Must have at least 1 year of experience in maintenance-related position (e.g., handyman, carpenter's apprentice , etc.)

Horticultural Technician

Seeking a Horticultural Technician to assist in the cultivation, maintenance and care of its botanical collections. This person works under the direction of the Horticultural Specialist and Botanical Department Manager and works with other botanical staff to develop and implement horticulture procedures (i.e. watering, pruning, fertilizing, spraying, transplanting, etc.) for proper cultivation and care of plants in the botanical collection.

Position Requirements:
Must be knowledgeable in horticulture techniques and practices with at least 3 years of work experience in the horticulture field.
Must be able to conduct research to determine specific cultivation and maintenance requirements for Waimea Valley collections.
Must be people-oriented and able to work well with others.
Must be organized and self-starter. Must exercise independent judgment to prioritize projects and respond to situations as they arise.
Must have good oral and written communication skills.
Must project a professional demeanor and be skilled in relating with people from different communities.

Educational Requirements:
Must have a Bachelor's degree in horticulture or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

Temporary Cultural Specialist Educator

Seeking a Temporary Full Time (May - September 2019) Cultural Specialist/Educator.  Under the direction of the Cultural Programs Manager, this person will provide an engaging cultural experience for our guests through activities that include but are not limited to, leading walking tours, demonstrating various cultural practices, and interpreting both cultural and botanical exhibits. This person will also teach school groups in an outdoor setting, using our existing educational curricula. Student ages range from early learners to college, and beyond.

Position Requirements:
1. Must be knowledgeable about one or more specific Hawaiian cultural practices and skilled in the performance of such practice.
2. Must be familiar with Hawaiian history and culture, including Waimea Valley's heritage. Must be familiar with major Hawaiian cultural issues.
3. Must be people-oriented and able to work well with others.
4. Must be organized and a self-starter.
5. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
6. Must have planning and time management skills necessary to assist or develop programs.
7. Must be familiar with Microsoft computer programs, including Word and Excel.
8. Must project a professional demeanor and be skilled in relating with people from different communities.

Educational Requirements:
As a minimum, a high school diploma is required. A degree (associates or four year) in Hawaiian Studies or a related field is highly desirable.
At least 2 years of relevant community or Hawaiian agency experience.
